00:00 and as always we got to start off with
00:03 the jingle so one two three as always
00:17 boom hey Greg hey how's it going man
00:22 busy weekend I was great I know I know
00:26 you had your new daughter's birthday
00:27 yesterday right party yesterday the
00:30 other birthday party yet birthday party
00:32 how'd that go
00:33 good good lots of food lots of cake but
00:38 uh you know I'm feeling good feeling
00:39 energized I had a nice big slice of cake
00:41 before this so I got a bunch of sugar in
00:42 me so I'm good
00:43 sweet sweet we need we need a hyper Greg
00:51 that's right hyper Greg so I'm seeing
00:58 them oh you pump pumped up my audio so
01:01 okay good
01:03 you've had a busy weekend huh yeah yeah
01:06 it was good a successful weekend I think
01:08 eight everyone in the chatbox see you
01:10 got any kind of questions or comments
01:12 from the from this weekend let us know
01:13 in the in the Q&A section or the chat
01:15 box or stuff that you want me and Greg
01:17 to comment on or talk about I'd love it
01:19 let me know what your favorite sessions
01:21 were that could be cool we're able to
01:23 watching many of the sessions at all
01:25 Greg or well I haven't I haven't watched
01:27 any today because it's been a family
01:29 weekend but I've been watching I've been
01:31 watching Fridays and Saturdays and I'm
01:35 impressed it's it's good it's nice to
01:37 see the community get together you know
01:38 rides me of the good old days I guess
01:41 when when we both started out and what
01:43 attracted us to rapid weaver so it's
01:45 nice to see everybody get together and
01:46 have that community yeah community
01:50 influence there I was gonna ask you what
01:53 what's uh you'd be doing this for three
01:56 years now right this is your third year
01:57 yep that's my third year I really enjoy
01:59 it you know I I'd say when the right
02:01 before the first talk like a huge
02:03 butterflies in my stomach like right
02:05 before the first talk to the whole
02:06 conference like but like once I started
02:08 going man I was I was loving it and I
02:10 you know I I didn't give me any talks
02:11 obviously because it's
02:13 amazing how much likes little stuff you
02:14 gotta help this guy over here and then
02:16 he got oh I gotta get set up the next
02:17 speaker over here and it's a yeah
02:20 you know but I've kind of got it down I
02:21 like the kind of geeky technical setup I
02:24 gots pretty cool I got Wirecast managing
02:26 the video a audio hijacked manage the
02:28 audio and as kind of fun um yeah I
02:31 really enjoy it now it's a lot of fun
02:33 yeah yeah nice how do you how do you
02:35 think how do you think it's changed over
02:36 the years I mean I've noticed that the
02:39 panelists have really changed and we've
02:41 had a this this year seems like it's
02:42 significantly more community based than
02:45 previous years right yeah another thing
02:48 I've noticed it's it seems like we're
02:50 all I enjoy the topics a lot more it
02:55 seems nuts it and I don't want to bang
02:57 previous years a lot of years were how
02:58 to's um you know a lot of how-to stuff
03:01 and this year seemed this year III tried
03:04 to be a little bit different this year
03:05 in that you know I wanted it to be more
03:08 of more of talks that people might not
03:10 find on youtube per se you know what I
03:12 mean like not just like here's how you
03:15 use font Pro or here is how you do this
03:18 stack you know and I mean we had some of
03:20 that and it's like so but they were all
03:21 like out of the box like next-level
03:23 stuff I thought and really you know
03:25 stretching people to become better right
03:28 so yeah I'm really excited about it i I
03:30 was really happy with a you know in the
03:32 comments that I've gotten so far
03:34 everyone seems to love the entire
03:36 conference so right so say it's far more
03:39 right brained this year than left
03:41 brained there we are
03:43 yeah yeah yeah a little more creative a
03:45 little more a little more creative than
03:48 technical so that's good yeah I mean
03:51 I've the the talks I have watched are
03:53 very interesting there's I see like a
03:57 common theme going on to you it's like
04:01 you know the whole theme of being a
04:03 niche gets repeated throughout of the
04:05 videos in different words and in
04:07 different yep he's yeah it's a couple
04:10 things I noticed either yeah a niche
04:12 will one of them another thing was that
04:14 I think was more prevalent that I
04:16 thought was interesting was the the
04:19 notion of we can't just build a website
04:23 for someone like if you want to have a a
04:25 web design business you have to
04:27 I value to the customer not just yeah I
04:30 can throw up a webpage for you right and
04:32 and you don't do exactly what they want
04:33 right you got a you have to be better
04:35 than that if you want to I think be a
04:37 successful designer and and maybe you
04:40 know take things to the next level right
04:42 if you you know if you want to get over
04:44 the you know three or $400 500 all
04:46 projects or something like that you know
04:48 you're gonna have to share showing how
04:49 you can provide more value to the client
04:51 and your customer and there are so many
04:54 great ideas with with how to do that I
04:58 loved it it was one of my favorite
04:59 favorite themes that that kind of wove
05:01 through the conference right so so to
05:06 reiterate when you're saying or saying
05:07 you have to think bigger picture address
05:11 their core problems that they're trying
05:13 to solve and not just slap a pretty
05:15 picture on page yep exactly exactly
05:18 you know right and then my other
05:21 thoughts around the whole niche niche
05:23 thing is that you know the Internet is
05:26 global but you're a local so don't
05:29 ignore your local audience you know
05:31 that's where your cup is some of your
05:32 competitive advantages some of your
05:34 niche stuff is and you know you don't
05:37 have to have a big brand identity and be
05:39 and compete on a global scale but you
05:41 can compete successfully on a local
05:43 school a local scale yep that's not only
05:45 you know don't be tena wouldn't want
05:48 people to get discouraged to saying that
05:49 you know how am I supposed to it seems
05:52 it can be overwhelming I guess is what
05:53 I'm saying yeah you know I I like got a
05:55 lot of feedback I didn't have to try to
05:57 hassle Justin II stole because he he's
05:59 he definitely in his talk he talked
06:01 about you know localized SEO right and
06:05 seems like he really nailed that part
06:07 where um you know if you search for him
06:10 and in particularly his area like he
06:13 always shows up for people right and
06:15 that seemed to be a really big win for
06:16 him where you know it's that localized
06:18 SEO and even in you know we talked to
06:21 Andy today about you know Facebook
06:23 marketing and how we could potentially
06:25 localize some of that marketing as well
06:27 so you can you know use Facebook you
06:30 know yeah Google is great for obviously
06:32 for local business listing and stuff
06:34 like that but maybe using you know if
06:35 you wanted to do some Facebook Ads to
06:36 target people in your general area of
06:39 the state you could potentially do that
06:41 as well so so yeah I definitely think
06:44 you know a lot of times we feel like
06:45 we're in a global world online um and
06:50 you know trying to target things locally
06:53 is tough right sometimes and I think
06:56 those two things um you know would be
06:58 really beneficial to the local web
07:01 designer you know yeah yep so what do
07:06 you think you can improve on next year
07:08 then what do you think didn't go so
07:11 smoothly technical I don't know are you
07:15 thinking about a so obvious so um I I
07:20 would like to market the market the
07:23 conference better um you know I I think
07:25 I like to do this this year I I mean I
07:30 marketed this year but I don't you know
07:32 I I was so busy and focused on getting
07:34 this website done and getting it done
07:36 bites you know at least what we got done
07:38 by today is is it was a was a lot of
07:40 work um so yeah you know I think if I
07:45 you know I really from last year I was
07:48 I'm gonna start playing you know at
07:49 least six months in start market you
07:50 know some some sort of marketing
07:52 campaign you know like a week and a half
07:54 ago I was like oh let me let me try to
07:56 do Facebook ads and by that time it's
07:57 kind of already too late you know and so
08:00 you know I I took that that Facebook Ads
08:02 course and I learned a lot but it was
08:04 just too little too late um so that's
08:07 one thing I'd like to do other things
08:09 like I just released the goodie bag
08:13 everybody I'm sorry but you know stuff
08:15 like that I should have had again it was
08:18 just I think was just because I was
08:19 overwhelmed with getting this website
08:21 stuff done that you know stuff like that
08:23 I kind of left by the wayside and I'm
08:24 sorry everyone but I just posted that in
08:26 the chat box so hopefully all of you are
08:29 getting access to that goodie bag right
08:31 now that has great discounts for me Greg
08:34 a lot of other speakers so cool and for
08:38 the for the listeners that I'm assuming
08:40 you're gonna post this show that's a
08:42 exclusive goodie bag for your attendees
08:44 yeah oh thank you yes yes that is an
08:47 exclusive goodie bag for attendees
08:49 someone didn't notice that the WSC
08:52 download link that's in the goodie bag
08:53 doesn't work
08:54 yeah I'm still compiling all the
08:55 downloads from presenters I still have a
08:58 couple more I have to get from
08:59 presenters and then I'll compile that
09:00 zip file so I'll make sure I ping
09:03 everyone to let you know when that is
09:05 when that's available so hopefully by by
09:08 tomorrow or something like that I'll
09:09 have all that done and uploaded so
09:11 thanks Andy for pointing that out so
09:14 back to the marketing just for one one
09:16 quick second mm-hmm you basically used
09:19 what the forms and emails and when you
09:21 relied on the ship's email yeah pretty
09:24 much yeah Mike radio this year I I tried
09:26 to do like the whole like I seen a lot
09:29 of other conferences like you have the
09:30 Twitter feed like live during the thing
09:32 yeah that didn't work it was only me and
09:34 thanks Brian for posting some Brian who
09:38 posts this from Twitter I was after Oh
09:40 after yesterday afternoon I was like is
09:42 only me and Brian post and so I stopped
09:44 I stopped streaming the Twitter feed
09:46 anything you hashtag WSC 2018 you know
09:50 it was cool I I thought getting that
09:52 working was interesting and and whatnot
09:54 but yeah I don't know didn't work out
09:57 but it's okay so I think next year you
10:01 expand beyond because I mean we talked
10:03 about it here we've talked about your
10:05 conference coming up on video plenty
10:07 right so yep you get that the forums
10:10 email Dexter you're thinking about
10:12 expanding into Facebook Ads
10:13 yes Google Google Ads I don't know I've
10:20 heard so much I tried Google Ads it was
10:22 a long time ago and I I wasted a lot of
10:25 money on Google ads and got like no
10:26 benefit from them maybe I was doing them
10:29 wrong it's possible but I don't know
10:31 it's my bad experience with Google ads
10:33 in the past makes me not want to do them
10:35 again even though maybe I should dip my
10:38 toes in there again and just give it a
10:39 shot you know obviously I'm I'm better
10:41 than I was before right you know I had
10:43 more knowledge so maybe I gave them
10:45 better now yeah same same here it was
10:48 just the CPM the cost per click
10:52 basically is way too high for trying to
10:56 target rapidweaver users even even
10:58 though we're still in my name is a niche
11:00 market there's just so much SEO
11:04 competition from you know what I was
11:06 trying to do it I was trying to do
11:08 even hosting providers have you know
11:10 we'll have like these landing pages and
11:12 because these hosting providers are you
11:16 know conglomerates
11:17 they just outrank anything that i could
11:20 possibly target to get on you know
11:21 they'll they'll pay two dollars a click
11:24 or whatever right and guys it's like yep
11:27 it isn't that's not how burn your don't
11:29 burn your ash like it's not right
11:31 that'll burn your head budget in like
11:33 hours right yeah so I did I did learn
11:36 something from doing the Facebook ads
11:38 for for this week so I tried the you
11:40 know in Facebook you could boost a post
11:42 I'm sure you guys have probably seen
11:43 this like if you you know Facebook tries
11:45 to get you to boost your post right so I
11:48 thought I'd give that a shot and I said
11:50 it to be have a budget of $25 over ten
11:53 days right and I I thought because of
11:57 how Facebook Ads is you give it a budget
11:59 per day but when you boost a post its
12:02 $25 for the entire duration of that you
12:05 wanted so I thought I was just getting
12:09 horrible like I thought I was just
12:10 failing like cuz I go every day and
12:12 check him like only got 7 like like
12:15 views today what the hell like like this
12:17 sucks and I realized that is because
12:19 instead of doing $25 a day for 10 days
12:22 it did my $25 for 10 days like so that
12:29 was something that I learned you know
12:31 that was saying I failed at the Facebook
12:33 Ads this year because it was that
12:35 basically I I thought I was failing then
12:37 I realized at the end when I got build
12:39 $25 for 10 days I was like like check
12:45 boggs going off like I understand now I
12:48 see says the blind man you know care
12:51 yeah it's I find that those things all
12:56 those kind of things need a lot of
12:57 attention and hand-holding I haven't
12:59 been able to automate that at all and
13:01 you have something had to keep on top of
13:03 that and yeah just managing just like
13:05 it's been too much it's too distracting
13:07 from doing other things that are I find
13:10 either more important or more
13:13 interesting to be frank a
13:17 well that's great so you think he had a
13:19 successful conference yep
13:21 everybody seems to enjoyed it surprised
13:23 I hope hopefully still people are still
13:25 around to watch us live yeah yeah people
13:29 is great man yeah welcome to my home
13:33 the dog is the dog is here to seven oh
13:36 we got penny and he's in the house and
13:39 we had some great how-to sessions I give
13:41 props to mo of Steve be still in here he
13:44 gave a great talk on email and building
13:47 email him really thanks
13:51 Steve's a client he does he does really
13:53 great work um so anybody you know if he
13:57 didn't catch a go rewatch it if you did
13:59 catch it go watch it again anyway
14:01 because yeah he's he has good tips and
14:04 he does really good work and stuff so I
14:06 highly recommend recommend his stuff so
14:08 it's amazing because he has you know he
14:14 has his small collection of cycling
14:16 cycling shops in the UK as like wow you
14:18 know you turned that into into into a
14:21 good network so yeah yeah you know a lot
14:25 of people actually love David sparks on
14:27 the first day the lawyer um you know the
14:29 the legal side of websites a lot of
14:31 people enjoyed that talk they learned a
14:33 lot from that so it was really good I
14:34 like David he's he's a great guy and he
14:37 knew how to inject some fun into a very
14:41 serious topic and I enjoyed that a lot
14:44 yes yes max Berkey yes yep yep good old
14:48 Mac springy yeah definitely I did I did
14:50 catch that one he did he had a lot of
14:52 great tips there I definitely agree with
14:55 the your you know the lawyers and the
14:59 and the accountants are worth the money
15:01 so pay a good lawyer pay go to come
15:03 because they will save you money in the
15:05 long run see they'll save you in your
15:09 taxes they'll save you from an expensive
15:11 lawsuit or you know being exposed to you
15:15 know being exposed to some high risks
15:17 ventures or investments or you know
15:19 partnerships you know I just say there
15:22 was one talk I was a little nervous
15:23 because it was talked completely outside
15:26 the realm of web design right I mean
15:28 like Facebook ads that you know we
15:30 say that's you know that's part of web
15:31 design but I'd my good friend Jeff
15:34 McMahan come and talk about you know
15:35 fitness and health and stuff like that
15:37 and yeah I was ill I was a little
15:40 nervous on how it would be taken I
15:41 thought it would I thought people would
15:43 enjoy and apparently a lot of people did
15:46 so I got a lot of personal feedback from
15:49 people saying that they really
15:50 appreciated that you know he was on they
15:52 learned a lot of information and so it
15:54 was good I was a little nervous about
15:56 you know trying to bring in something
15:57 completely different but something I
16:00 thought people would enjoy and I guess
16:02 it paid off
16:03 um so yeah I'm happy with that nice
16:05 that's cool that was today off to catch
16:08 that later yeah yeah seven he reminds
16:11 your discussion I was having just this
16:13 week with somebody how like your life
16:17 changes when you have a kid it's like if
16:20 far more focused everything is far more
16:23 intense to get stuff done because your
16:25 time is he also is so scarce that you
16:29 know so reminds me of that you know
16:32 having the fitness and the discipline to
16:35 execute on things so good good yeah so
16:40 what do you got working on Greg you got
16:42 something any any any nice buns cooking
16:45 in the fire or something um yeah I got
16:49 so much stuff like it's almost like I'm
16:51 spread so then kicking off a new design
16:54 for chili dog hosting that's officially
16:56 and officially underway I can't Wayne
16:58 which is which is to answer Brian why my
17:02 email marketing efforts are on pause
17:03 right now because I want the new site to
17:05 be launched first hopefully that it that
17:08 you know quiets him down nothing will
17:12 ever quiet him it up yeah
17:18 Weaver pics for is in the queue I'm
17:21 working with will on testing cleanup
17:24 based on some feedback from Paul Paul
17:27 were some gave his talk earlier a master
17:29 breaker of things yes yes so and then
17:34 what else do I get going on
17:37 those are the mean those are the main
17:39 things right now documentation is really
17:42 what I've been focusing on to be honest
17:43 cool yeah for the hosting so have I
17:48 built the tool that will walk through
17:52 pages on my website and document stuff
17:57 so so I spent all this time like upfront
18:00 I'm making something I'll just take
18:03 screenshots and walk through like a page
18:04 so it'll like it'll log into the
18:06 building area it'll click these links
18:07 and then it takes screenshots along the
18:09 way so you could have like this you know
18:11 timeline so now now it's actually
18:15 finally like working it has the features
18:16 that I need to build some more advanced
18:18 stuff so I'm starting to just write
18:21 documentation focusing I'm just writing
18:23 documentation then development is kind
18:25 of taking a backseat right now because
18:27 I'm trying to focus on the user
18:30 experience and part of that is you know
18:32 documentation how approachable these
18:34 things are so people can get the answers
18:37 faster easier better and in terms that
18:40 they understand so that's sort of trying
18:43 to hit sweet sweet yeah it's a lot of
18:46 work slow it's very slow what do you
18:49 think of the new site design I don't
18:51 think you've had I did I just see it
18:54 because I've been waiting for 40 minutes
18:55 feet'll and you didn't answer my text
19:01 messages on my slacks or you might think
19:04 oh it was it was like a mess it was like
19:09 it was like that scene in Clockwork
19:11 Orange and their areas are like you know
19:13 glued wide open no no I'm just kidding
19:15 um no looks like it's coming along good
19:18 I would say you know bump me up a little
19:20 bit maybe maybe number zero before
19:28 negotiate when negotiating I'll talk I
19:30 was like okay not coming on good good to
19:36 see you on making progress on it I know
19:38 you've been working working late and you
19:41 know having late-night conferences
19:45 conferences how you know about that one
19:48 Greg you know I'd like to I'd like to
19:52 poke my head around and keep an eye on
19:53 things so great yeah back to the
20:05 conference just quickly is that Brent
20:08 got that cuz you ya know I'm you know
20:14 congrats you and cat you know I don't
20:17 have a beer with me so Cheers and
20:18 Congrats on pulling it off and ending it
