00:00 hey everybody Joe workman here and in
00:01 this video we're gonna be looking over
00:03 all of the basics of SEO meta tags so
00:07 we're gonna be looking at how to
00:08 implement all the various meta tags
00:10 inside SEO helper and how to get started
00:12 with SEO helper
00:24 so before we dive into rapid eevr
00:26 there's a couple things I want to hash
00:28 out so SEO helper utilizes a PHP set so
00:34 a lot of our products over the years
00:36 have supported PHP 5.6 last year even
00:40 the PHP foundation themselves deprecated
00:42 it is gone
00:43 PHP 5.6 is no longer supported so make
00:47 sure that if you are going to be using
00:48 SEO helper that your server your web
00:51 server is running PHP 7.2 now next up
00:54 you need to be running at least Mac OS
00:56 10 dot 13 or above that's high sierra
00:59 and above in order to preview SEO helper
01:03 in side rapidweaver the reason for this
01:06 is that 10.13 is the first version that
01:09 Mac OS shipped PHP 7 prior to that it's
01:13 still used the unsupported version of
01:15 PHP 5.6 so make sure that you're running
01:18 10.13 or high sierra and above in order
01:21 to use SEO helper on your local Mac now
01:24 before we dive into SEO helper there's a
01:26 few things that we need to make sure
01:28 that we turn off and clean up inside the
01:30 wrapper your project so the SEO helper
01:32 runs smoothly
01:33 and before they do that I want to show
01:35 you two features that SEO helper has ok
01:38 so if I just preview this page there's a
01:40 couple checkers that SEO helper has in
01:43 the background to help us out first you
01:45 will see that it supports a duplicate
01:47 meta tag checker so that normally means
01:51 that you have some duplicate meta tags
01:53 probably that you have rapid eevr meta
01:55 tags turned off we're gonna show you how
01:57 to turn those off in a minute but next
02:00 up you'll know that it also has a
02:02 duplicate page finder built into the
02:06 stacks now this only shows inside rapid
02:08 eevr but it tells you whether or not you
02:10 have both HTML and PHP versions of a
02:13 particular web page on your server so as
02:16 you see here I have both an HTML and a
02:18 PHP version of this particular file on
02:21 the server now SEO helper uses PHP
02:24 therefore you're gonna want to make sure
02:26 that you have the PHP version of the
02:28 page on the server if you have an HTML
02:31 version you're gonna have to delete it
02:33 ok or else you will never see any of the
02:36 benefits from SEO
02:37 helper because your web server is gonna
02:39 be serving the HTML file because those
02:41 always take precedence now easily right
02:45 inside this modal there is a button here
02:47 that you can you actually use to delete
02:48 the HTML file right here from inside
02:51 Rapid e verb now if you want you can
02:53 also use your favorite FTP app and then
02:56 go to the server and delete the file
02:57 manually else what I'm gonna do is I'm
02:59 just gonna go ahead and delete that HTML
03:00 file and um it cleans it up for us
03:03 if i refresh this preview will see that
03:06 that duplicate page is gone it no longer
03:08 alerts me about that so let's go ahead
03:10 and fix the duplicate meta tags found
03:12 what do we need to do to resolve that
03:14 one next up let's go to general and
03:17 inside Jenner you're gonna want to turn
03:19 off generate social tags what this does
03:22 is it stops wrapping or from generating
03:24 social media tags because we're now
03:26 going to be doing those with SEO helper
03:30 now next up if you have any meta tags
03:32 inside this site-wide code area um you
03:35 may want to clean those up if there are
03:37 tags that SEO helper is going to take
03:38 care of for us um by default this is
03:40 blank so it may be blank for you as well
03:46 so now what we're gonna do is we're
03:48 going to go into the page inspector for
03:50 a page and go to the meta tags tab over
03:55 here in the page inspector and what
03:57 we're gonna want to do is we're going to
03:58 turn off robot meta tags and if you have
04:02 if since we've already turned it off in
04:03 the general settings um this is already
04:06 grayed out but if this is there make
04:08 sure you uncheck that and also again
04:10 make sure you uncheck it over here in
04:12 the general preferences area in the
04:13 project but now we're good to go make
04:16 sure if you have any descriptions delete
04:18 that because all of this data here is
04:20 now gonna be managed by SEO helper so if
04:23 we preview the page now we do see that
04:25 the duplicate meta tag checker is gone
04:27 yay now if you are still seeing a
04:31 duplicate meta tag checker and you're
04:32 certain that you've turned everything
04:34 off here let's go ahead I'm gonna enable
04:36 robots meta tag here um so we have this
04:38 duplicate meta meta tags found but we
04:41 want to know what that actually is so
04:43 we're gonna do is we're gonna
04:44 right-click on in preview and say
04:45 inspect element we're going to go over
04:49 to our console and we'll see that where
04:51 there are some warnings and here it says
04:53 duplicate meta tag found for robots
04:55 right so now we know that we have some
04:58 robots meta tag data that's duplicate on
05:02 the page so again all of this duplicate
05:04 page checker or meta tag checker only
05:06 happens inside wrap Weaver so you don't
05:08 need to worry about publishing the page
05:10 and seeing these little modal's inside
05:13 your published projects okay now for the
05:16 fun and exciting stuff we're gonna dive
05:18 into SEO meta tag okay now when you
05:22 first add SEO meta tags to the page you
05:25 will see that it adds in by default the
05:29 SEO basics now these are all the basic
05:31 meta tags that you're gonna need for a
05:33 majority of your web pages okay so we're
05:36 gonna do is you're gonna you know you
05:37 have your site title um again this isn't
05:39 a site title this is actually the page
05:41 title okay so you're gonna want your
05:43 page title here um you need to have a
05:45 full image URL okay so you're going to
05:48 need to probably either warehouse an
05:50 image probably an easy way to do that is
05:52 if if you use rap Reavers resources api
05:54 right you can add an image to your
05:57 resources you can right click and say
05:59 copy you
06:00 Rell right and then when you copy that
06:02 URL you could simply paste that directly
06:05 into the image URL area here that's
06:08 probably the easiest way to do that if
06:10 you know how to warehouse images and
06:11 things of that nature go ahead and use
06:13 your favorite method but that is a
06:15 really simple way to get started add an
06:17 image to the resources right click copy
06:20 URL paste it straight in there next up
06:23 you're gonna have description okay now
06:25 what you'll notice is the description
06:27 here is used for both the page
06:29 description as well as the social og
06:32 Open Graph descriptions that is used to
06:34 share across social media and whatnot
06:36 okay now we have an auto detect page URL
06:40 is basically it talks to wrap Weaver and
06:43 figures out the actual published URL um
06:46 if you want to override that you can
06:48 simply type in a manual URL if you want
06:51 as well but um if it's just a normal
06:53 wrap over page um not like something
06:55 that uses total Seamas blog or some
06:57 other you know fancy stacks that could
07:00 potentially change URLs the auto detect
07:03 URL is going to be perfect next up is
07:06 the index site and follow links this is
07:08 robot stuff right so do we want search
07:10 engines to index the site and do we want
07:12 them to follow links on this page okay
07:15 and next up is down here and how do we
07:19 want to manage this content you have
07:21 user defined or if your total CMS user
07:24 you can actually turn on total CMS
07:25 support and what you would do here is
07:28 you would actually put in the CMS IDs
07:30 that you want this to resolve right so
07:33 here I would do you know page title
07:36 which is my CMS ID here I would do share
07:40 image again this is the if you would put
07:44 in just the CMS IDs in here for image
07:46 URLs this is gonna be the CMS ID of an
07:49 actual image drop zone so you can drag
07:51 and drop an image and that's going to be
07:52 the CMS ID of the actual image the rest
07:55 these are gonna be actual just text
07:57 areas okay now for right now you can't
08:02 manage the robots day to its total CMS
08:04 it's just the textual fields so these
08:07 check boxes obviously you can do auto
08:09 detect URL and put in a and a CMS ID in
08:13 here
08:14 I think auto-detect URL is probably
08:16 gonna work for you in most use cases but
08:19 again inside these areas you're just
08:20 gonna put in the CMS IDs and then total
08:25 CMS that's on the page will actually
08:27 resolve those to be the actual data that
08:29 you need okay so let's say that the
08:33 basics isn't enough for you right you
08:35 need you want more control over this
08:37 maybe you want some additional
08:39 attributes now what you could do is you
08:41 could start with the basics and then you
08:43 can add things let's say you want to
08:45 have geolocation so you can you can mix
08:47 SEO basics plus geolocation totally
08:51 possible let's say you wanted more
08:53 specific open gret there's additional
08:54 Open Graph tags that not everyone really
08:57 needs to use um there some Twitter stuff
08:59 right there's if you really wanted more
09:01 control Oh
09:02 basically what you news you're gonna get
09:04 rid of SEO basic okay and then basically
09:07 you're gonna add a lot of that stuff
09:09 individually so we can add our canonical
09:11 URLs we can add page description we can
09:15 add robots and basically we can build
09:18 our own custom SEO tags for this
09:22 particular page okay so as you see you
09:25 can add in Open Graph and then we go and
09:28 Open Graph there's a bunch of optional
09:30 fields here okay now if you hover over
09:32 these fields inside the settings you'll
09:35 get some detailed descriptions about
09:37 what those are and things of that nature
09:39 right so a lot of these are optional
09:41 fields so if you want a lot of these
09:43 you're going to make sure that you add
09:45 in the Open Graph tag get rid of the
09:48 basics one and then just start adding
09:50 and building your own custom page
09:54 now obviously from here you want to look
09:56 at structure data too it's another
09:57 popular one we're gonna have a video
09:59 specifically unstructured data out of
10:02 not going to review it here but yes now
10:06 we're gonna talk about it maybe a little
10:07 bit about what do all these tags give
10:10 you when do you want to use them and
10:12 when may you not want to use them so
10:15 what we're gonna do now is I'm just
10:17 gonna go down this list and talk about
10:18 the various meta tags and when you might
10:21 want to use them so canonical URL what
10:24 is a canonical URL to illustrate that
10:27 we're gonna be looking at The Weavers
10:28 base site and hopefully you recognize
10:30 this page this is Weaver space and this
10:32 is the stacks page and if you've never
10:35 noticed inside on this page we have
10:37 different ways you can display layouts
10:39 right via these toggles now if you
10:42 notice what this does is it adds this
10:45 this question mark layout equals list to
10:48 the URL now Google is going to see this
10:51 as a different URL it's going to see
10:53 Weaver space slash stacks as different
10:56 from Weaver space slash stacks question
10:59 mark layout equals list but I want
11:01 Google to know that those two pages are
11:03 exactly the same they shouldn't index
11:05 them and consider them two different web
11:07 pages right so this particular page
11:11 actually has three possible URLs if I go
11:13 ahead and click explicitly quick click
11:15 on this grid you'll see that we have up
11:18 at the URL bar question mark layout
11:20 equals grid
11:22 so illustrate this these are the three
11:26 different URLs that are possible on this
11:28 particular page right and I want to make
11:31 sure that Google only references this
11:34 URL so no matter what parameters are
11:37 added to the end of this URL I want to
11:38 make sure that Google knows that no
11:41 matter if you go to this URL or this URL
11:44 the real URL to this page is this first
11:46 one here so inside my wrap Weaver
11:49 Project for canonical URL on that page
11:51 I'm gonna put in this URL that way
11:55 Google knows that this is the exact URL
11:57 to this page no matter how what other
11:59 variations of the URL it sees other
12:04 places that canonical URLs are going to
12:05 be good for is if you're using pretty
12:07 URLs inside total CMS and other
12:10 solutions like that okay
12:13 next up let's look at page description
12:16 this is pretty apparent this is the page
12:18 description this is what shows up as the
12:20 small little paragraph under inside
12:22 Google you definitely want this tag
12:25 there is no this is I would say this is
12:27 a required tag next is robots um while
12:31 you don't need to have this I recommend
12:34 you have it so that you have control
12:36 whether or not explicitly going to index
12:38 this page or not now by default if
12:40 Google or any search engine doesn't see
12:42 these tags on your page it's going to
12:44 index it so if you just want Google to
12:46 index everything you don't necessarily
12:48 need to have it right but you want to
12:51 make sure that you have this especially
12:52 if you don't want pages to be indexed
12:55 because then you just uncheck this and
12:57 it will change it to be no index so that
12:59 google and other search engines will
13:01 never index this page next up is
13:03 geolocation now if you're a local
13:05 business this is going to be really
13:07 important you're going on you're gonna
13:09 want to make sure that you have your
13:10 geolocation set and this is going to be
13:13 important if you want to have people do
13:15 local search because Google is going to
13:17 use this tag to know that this
13:21 particular website is within this
13:23 particular local region so I'm gonna
13:25 serve up if someone searches for
13:27 photographers in the area or architects
13:30 in the area or whatever your business is
13:32 whatever your local business says you
13:34 want that local search and this is a
13:36 very important one now for local you're
13:39 gonna wanna make sure you also have
13:40 local business structured data I will
13:42 review this later on when we talk about
13:45 structured data in a separate video but
13:47 um just want to add for local business
13:49 make sure that you add structured data
13:51 for that as well so I'm sure you've seen
13:54 whenever you share a URL on social media
13:57 whether it's Twitter or Facebook or
13:59 slack or the Weaver space community
14:01 right you get these nice previews right
14:04 so here I added the URL this is a good
14:07 little social media testing tool I've
14:09 reviewed this and a lot of other tools
14:11 similar to it in a live stream that I
14:14 did so check out our YouTube channel for
14:15 that live stream on how to use SEO
14:18 helper for social media okay
14:21 but this is a great tool to test how
14:23 things are gonna look so when someone
14:25 shares my SEO helper product page
14:27 Facebook this is what they see and all
14:29 of this is accomplished through using
14:31 the SEO help our meta tags okay and here
14:34 we see this is what it looks like on
14:36 Twitter here's what it looks like on
14:37 slack and here's what it looks like
14:39 unlinked in again all that is
14:43 accomplished through the Facebook Open
14:45 Graph tags now there are Twitter
14:48 specific ones as well so mostly you're
14:50 going to use a Twitter summary card okay
14:52 there are some others for app so if you
14:54 have an app this is an app specific one
14:56 that has like URLs - iPhone app stores
14:59 and Google Play stores and stuff like
15:01 that right so if you are an app
15:03 developer you definitely want to have
15:04 this app card in there and next up is
15:07 you're gonna want to make sure if you
15:08 have a there's a player card as well if
15:09 you have you know a video particular
15:12 video on the page and you want to make
15:14 sure that you know those nice little
15:15 iframes play on Twitter a twitter has
15:18 some specific stuff for there now inside
15:21 the Facebook Open Graph tags we do have
15:23 some optional stuff here we have a video
15:25 and audio URLs so if you do want to have
15:27 some specific media about particular
15:31 page you can go ahead and add that data
15:32 and that will be used on Facebook now
15:36 here you can also define your Facebook
15:37 user name as well as your app ID your
15:40 app ID is if you want to look at
15:42 specific analytics inside Facebook's
15:44 developer tools you can kind of see how
15:46 many people are sharing your link across
15:48 you know Facebook and whatnot those
15:51 really aren't required I'm inside the
15:53 Facebook debugger tool it's gonna tell
15:55 you it's required but it really isn't
15:56 okay
15:57 um again check out that livestream that
15:59 did it on social media tags I really go
16:02 into all this in much more detail in
16:04 greater depth now with Open Graph you
16:07 can also define whether or not this is a
16:09 website whether it's a product whether
16:11 it's a book whether it's an article so
16:14 this kind of gives Facebook and other
16:16 social media an idea about what type of
16:18 media is this okay most time is probably
16:21 gonna be a website but if you have if
16:24 you if you have a product based site and
16:25 you're selling books or um you know
16:28 maybe it's a social profile maybe it's
16:29 your about page something like that you
16:32 can definitely tweak this data so that
16:34 Facebook knows what type of page this is
16:36 getting shared as
16:40 and just like in canonical URLs you can
16:42 auto detect the URL or you can
16:44 explicitly define one as well now if we
16:48 go all the way to the bottom of SEO meta
16:50 tags there's a few kind of helper ones
16:52 so I've added one here for disable
16:54 caching um there are no settings in this
16:56 particular stack but it's just a useful
16:58 one it adds some meta tags in there that
17:01 will tell the browser do not cache
17:03 anything on this page and so yeah if you
17:06 want this could be useful for admin
17:08 pages or things that you want to make
17:10 sure that the data is always brought
17:11 down from the server and never cached by
17:14 the browser I definitely recommend that
17:16 you on your live production sites though
17:18 that you don't add this or your your
17:20 active live web pages because browser
17:22 caching really does help speed up the
17:25 performance of your websites
17:27 and lastly we have custom meta tags now
17:30 inside custom meta tags we can nicely
17:32 just type in whatever custom HTML meta
17:34 tags we want directly in there and when
17:37 you're done you just click close um if
17:40 there are meta tags that you think you
17:41 would like to be added officially to SEO
17:44 meta tags let me know I'm always open to
17:46 ideas um but I think we've covered a
17:49 vast majority of the meta tags and again
17:52 make sure you check out the other videos
17:54 that we have specifically unstructured
17:56 data there we have it guys that is the
17:59 basics of the SEO meta tags I didn't go
18:02 through every single setting in detail
18:04 but hopefully you got a good overview of
18:06 all of the meta tags what they're used
18:09 for
18:09 how to get started again start with the
18:11 SEO basics and if you feel you need more
18:14 than that then you can add on to that or
18:17 replace it and kind of build your own
18:18 meta tags with the options available
18:20 from that drop-down menu right um if you
18:24 have questions about the various
18:26 settings hover over the little Settings
18:28 titles you'll get a nice description of
18:30 what that particular setting is um and
18:32 there should be really detailed settings
18:34 and descriptions of those for you so
18:37 hopefully that helps you out hope you're
18:39 enjoying SEO helper hope it really helps
18:41 you improve your SEO of your websites in
18:43 your social reach improving the richness
18:46 of how things are shared on social media
18:48 and I'm really excited I've loved all
18:50 the feedback I've been getting people in
18:52 really been loving SEO helper and I'm
18:54 glad it's been making an impact so make
18:57 sure you check out the other videos that
18:58 we have on SEO helper to get the most
18:59 out of the structured data and sitemaps
19:01 and 404 pages and all the other stuff so
19:04 take care of a wonderful day and we'll
19:06 talk to you soon bye
19:16 you"}]
