Transcript

00:00 it's been four months in the making and
00:03 total CMS 1.3 is finally here yes hey
00:14 everybody Joe were coming here and today
00:16 I am really excited to announce total
00:19 CMS 1.3 right I've been working on this
00:23 update for so long and first off I want
00:25 to say thank you a huge thank you to all
00:28 of the people that helped beta test this
00:30 for several months right we've been
00:33 adding a lot of great features making
00:36 things more usable and just plain old
00:38 better now I'm not gonna go over every
00:41 single thing that was updated ok there
00:43 are a lot of little bug fixes a lot of
00:46 new little settings here and they're
00:48 added ok so make sure that you check out
00:51 the full-blown release notes for all the
00:54 details about this update if you want to
00:56 see everything that's changed ok but in
00:59 this video right now I'm gonna go over
01:01 some of the bigger staples of this
01:04 particular update so the first thing
01:07 we're gonna talk about is something
01:08 that's completely invisible to you ok
01:10 and that is security this update of
01:13 total CMS brings so much more secure
01:16 connections and sessions to total CMS
01:20 that it's exponentially better than the
01:23 previous versions ok first off the your
01:28 total CMS license is now used as an API
01:31 key ok that means that without that API
01:36 key it is impossible to add or edit
01:39 anything inside your CMS ok now what
01:44 that means is inside rapidweaver you'll
01:48 notice that inside the admin core stack
01:50 you have to have the license key in
01:53 there now ok so even after you register
01:57 it the API slash license key needs to be
02:00 there on every admin core stack and it
02:04 also needs to be on the content pages
02:06 inside every single CMS core stacked
02:11 now if you ever don't add in the license
02:14 key you will see a red warning inside
02:18 the CMS course stack and the admin
02:20 course stack to let you know that you
02:22 forgot to add your API key to the stack
02:26 settings now on top of that we've also
02:28 added a couple great things all of the
02:32 text that is sent from the browser as
02:34 you're editing and is sent to the to the
02:36 server is all encoded now so with a lot
02:40 of hosting companies that have maybe
02:41 some security rules okay all total CMS
02:46 should be fine with all of those rules
02:47 now since all the text is encoded before
02:50 it's even sent to the server okay so
02:53 that gives us a little bit more secure
02:54 connections now on top of that okay
02:57 protect stack no longer uses cookies
03:00 okay it uses more secure PHP sessions so
03:04 we have a lot of security now built into
03:07 total CMS 1.3 now next up we have three
03:11 new CMS items for us okay so let's jump
03:15 in and quickly see what these new things
03:18 do for us so the first here is numbers
03:21 okay we now on the admin side have the
03:24 ability to have a number input box now
03:27 these numbers save exactly as if it was
03:29 a text okay as if it was total text okay
03:32 but these number boxes give us a little
03:35 bit of more flexibility to maybe have
03:38 our users only input numbers into
03:40 specific fields and what's great is we
03:42 have the ability to define a minimum and
03:44 maximum and also if they were to you
03:46 know take via these up and down arrows
03:49 it'll increment by five ten or whatever
03:51 increment you want those to be so while
03:54 this is just saving us text it just
03:57 gives us more flexibility in terms of
04:00 displaying and building our admin area
04:02 so that it's easier to use for our end
04:04 users now you'll probably notice the
04:08 next two things we're gonna talk about
04:09 the first thing is gonna be total
04:11 ratings and these are really cool this
04:14 allows us to add ratings to our websites
04:19 now this is the admin interface for
04:22 ratings
04:23 okay this
04:24 particular first one shows us all of the
04:26 ratings that users have submitted now
04:30 you can do from 1 to 10 stars and you
04:33 can also configure the icons so instead
04:35 of stars here I'm using hearts okay but
04:39 if we see here I have 0 5 stars I have 1
04:42 4 star and 0 3 twos and ones okay and
04:45 what's great is what we'll see on the
04:47 content side is those are averaged out
04:49 and will display the average rating for
04:53 all of those ok we also have simple
04:55 likes okay so if you want to you know
04:58 just simply have a like button or a
04:59 thumbs up you can do that and next is if
05:03 you want to statically define your own
05:06 rating for something okay as you see
05:09 here I could define let's say I want to
05:11 rate something five stars and display
05:13 that particular rating on my website
05:16 okay on the website side it's going to
05:18 be static but here I can control the
05:21 exact rating up to the point five stars
05:24 okay so you see we can do four four
05:26 point five five and all the way down to
05:29 zero okay so this is a really great
05:32 thing that we can do as well as you see
05:34 this gives us a lot of flexibility in
05:36 terms of how we want to use ratings on
05:38 our site let's go ahead and look at the
05:40 content side so here we are on the
05:42 content page and you'll notice that we
05:44 have a few different ways of viewing
05:45 things here I have the ability as it end
05:49 user if I want to write something as
05:50 five hearts or if I want to give it
05:52 three hearts okay and this is remembered
05:55 so no matter when I go back to this or
05:58 if I clear my browser cache this browser
06:01 is going to remember that I rated this
06:03 particular you know component three
06:06 hearts next over here on the right we
06:10 see that we have a static setting I
06:12 can't change this this is because this
06:14 is the setting that on the admin side we
06:17 set it to be a specific star rating from
06:21 the admin side so it just displays the
06:23 static rating that we've set on the
06:26 admin side and then here's an example of
06:29 a like where I can simply like something
06:32 or I can dislike it just by clicking it
06:34 again okay and that dislikes that
06:37 or doesn't dislike but it unlikes my
06:39 like okay so that is total ratings it's
06:44 a great way of adding ratings and likes
06:47 to our sites really awesome I'm in the
06:51 future we hope to integrate this in with
06:53 blogs and galleries as well so that
06:55 gives us even more flexibility next up
06:58 while we're here in the content side
06:59 let's look at an another awesome new
07:02 feature of total CMS and this is called
07:04 datastore now datastore has a lot of use
07:09 cases
07:10 okay well particularly to use cases okay
07:12 first off is it's just a generic form
07:15 and essentially you can add as many
07:18 fields as you want text fields and then
07:21 when the user saves it what happens is
07:23 the content from that form get saved to
07:26 a CSV file inside the CMS so whenever
07:31 you can type in your form save saves to
07:34 the CMS every single save of that form
07:37 gets saved to a centralized CSV file
07:40 okay let's see it in action right now
07:43 Sarah I've gone ahead and added some
07:46 information into my form and I'm just
07:48 gonna go ahead and click Save and what's
07:50 great is it is successful because it is
07:52 actually saved and gone away okay and
07:55 let's go ahead into the admin side and
07:57 see what's going on and here we are on
07:58 the admin interface for datastore and
08:00 it's extremely simple go ahead and click
08:04 on the edit button and we can bulk edit
08:07 or CSV file or see particularly the
08:09 contents of it okay you can make changes
08:12 in spokes in save this bulk edit of the
08:15 CSV file next is a simple download
08:19 button click on this link and the file
08:21 is immediately downloaded to your
08:23 machine that you can use for whatever
08:25 purposes you need now like I said
08:27 datastore can be pretty useful for other
08:30 things as well imagine you use the form
08:34 that traditionally is going to be on the
08:36 content side for this use case two that
08:38 I displayed here but what if you put the
08:42 form on the admin side this then allows
08:45 your users to input data that is then
08:47 inserted into a CSV file
08:50 maybe then you can use something like my
08:52 power grid CSV stack to actually display
08:56 that contents inside of a table wow
08:59 that's really powerful right it gives us
09:02 a lot of flexibility in terms of how we
09:04 can use things so you know on the either
09:07 the content side or the admin side right
09:09 the end-user
09:11 you know submitting information for our
09:13 clients or our clients inputting
09:16 information in the admin side to be
09:18 displayed on the website okay next up is
09:21 probably the number one requested
09:23 feature of total CMS okay and that has
09:26 to do with image galleries and
09:29 reordering them I'm so happy to say that
09:32 you can now manually reorder your image
09:35 galleries however you want and it
09:37 couldn't be easier just simply drag and
09:40 drop the images directly inside the
09:42 admin area and that order will be saved
09:45 into the CMS
09:46 again it couldn't be simpler if I want
09:49 to reorder an image I just click and
09:51 drag and drop it where I want it inside
09:54 the gallery order again couldn't be any
09:57 easier next is we have the ability to
10:00 define exactly what our featured images
10:03 are when you hover over it just simply
10:06 click on the star and that image is now
10:09 set as one of the featured images of
10:11 this gallery now on the image admin side
10:16 I've spent countless hours optimizing
10:20 and improving the image upload process
10:23 so that if you upload really large
10:26 images it will take it okay or it will
10:29 provide you a little bit better feedback
10:31 in terms of why that particular image is
10:33 couldn't be uploaded and it also gives
10:36 you the power to define more validation
10:39 rules before the image is ever uploaded
10:41 at all to stop users and inform them why
10:45 particular image might not be good
10:47 candidate okay
10:49 let's look at some of these settings so
10:51 here we have the image admin stack and I
10:53 want to say that these new settings that
10:55 I'm going to talk about right now apply
10:57 to both the individual image stack as
10:59 well as galleries first off for the alt
11:03 tag
11:04 by default its user-defined however now
11:07 we can pull in image metadata from the
11:09 actual image to populate that alt tag by
11:13 default so we can pull in the original
11:15 file name the title the caption or
11:19 copyright data from the exif data of the
11:22 image and insert that into the alt tag
11:25 this is really powerful now another
11:28 great feature that I didn't mention is
11:30 file names for galleries are now
11:33 retained by default so whatever image
11:36 that you upload that same exact file
11:39 name will now be used on the server now
11:43 we also have the ability to turn off
11:45 optimizing the original image when you
11:47 turn this off the original image will be
11:51 completely untouched by the CMS it will
11:54 just get uploaded and insert it into
11:56 place now obviously you can still
11:58 generate thumbnails as we did before to
12:00 find quality and max sizing okay but now
12:05 we also have the ability to define the
12:08 crop for both portrait and landscape
12:11 images so when you have a square crop
12:15 you can define on portrait images you
12:18 want a crop from the top the middle or
12:20 the bottom and then on landscape images
12:23 do you want a crop from the center left
12:25 or right so this gives you a lot of
12:27 control when generating those square
12:30 thumbnail images and lastly I talked
12:34 about having more upload validation
12:36 rules so now we can say for mode we only
12:41 want to accept landscape portrait or
12:43 square images we can validate the size
12:48 so make sure that the particular size of
12:50 the image isn't too large we define
12:53 height minimum and maximum height values
12:56 that the customer can upload as well as
12:58 minimum and maximum width values now you
13:02 don't need all of these you can just
13:04 turn on and off the rules that you want
13:06 for your particular situation I'm really
13:09 excited about these new image options
13:12 okay because it gives you a lot of power
13:15 to decide how your clients are gonna
13:18 upload images to your website right and
13:21 it protects and make sure that you know
13:23 especially making sure that the upload
13:25 landscape images or making sure that the
13:26 upload a portrait image just to make
13:29 sure that no matter what image is
13:31 uploaded it looks great right this is
13:35 the power of total CMS because we have
13:38 this flexibility to determine exactly in
13:42 morph the CMS into what our clients are
13:44 going to be doing right this is really
13:47 powerful I'm really excited about these
13:48 new image and gallery options available
13:50 in this update now lastly let's talk
13:54 about blog so blog was released in total
13:57 CMS 1.2 and it was awesome people are
14:00 absolutely loving it ok and I'm glad to
14:04 say that we've made it even better in
14:06 version 1.3 so in terms of all there are
14:10 a bunch of bug fixes and new little
14:12 settings here and there
14:13 check the release notes for that ok but
14:16 a couple big things that we've added
14:18 users wanted a new text area okay just
14:23 to add a little bit more flexibility
14:25 into blog so we've added a extra content
14:28 area into the blog so now we have
14:31 summary content and extra content ok
14:34 that extra content can be added to the
14:37 blog post page and can be used for
14:39 whatever you want maybe it could be used
14:41 for adding some pricing information or
14:43 some review data or a little widget that
14:48 you want to add to every single blog
14:50 post ok right but it is up to you ok it
14:54 gives you the flexibility of having an
14:56 extra area that you can add to every
14:58 single blog post this gives us a lot of
15:01 flexibility now last if you've used
15:05 total CMS blog before you know that
15:08 there there was some confusion about how
15:11 the blog linking and pretty URLs are
15:13 done right so we've spent a lot of time
15:17 doing trial and error over the past few
15:19 months coming up with the best and
15:21 easiest solution to this and I'm glad to
15:24 say that I'm confident we have nailed it
15:27 ok we have nailed helping
15:29 you build pretty URLs that you have nice
15:33 pretty URLs for your blog's okay let's
15:37 look at that now
15:39 now previous to this update you had to
15:42 actually add some post view page
15:44 settings in the in the blog forum stack
15:47 and potentially in the blog list stack
15:50 write all of that's gone okay and it's
15:54 all handled from the blog post stack on
15:57 the content page okay so this is my blog
16:01 post page on the content side and that
16:03 makes sense because this is the page
16:04 that we want pretty URLs for okay what
16:09 you'll notice here is we haven't now
16:10 have a post URL some settings here for
16:12 post URL and by default let's go ahead
16:16 and preview this page so what you will
16:20 see is when you first open this blog
16:22 post inside rapidweaver okay you'll see
16:26 that the server setting that says
16:27 nothing is set for the blog post URL not
16:31 by default it's not going to use pretty
16:33 URLs and you could just go ahead and
16:36 submit this okay and when you submit it
16:39 it is gone and if you go to edit and
16:42 back in a preview you will never see
16:45 that lightbox show up again unless your
16:49 project has changed unless maybe you
16:51 changed the URL maybe you change the
16:53 name of this page right but what's this
16:56 is smart is because it automates it for
16:58 you 100% it knows that the cert the
17:02 setting on the server is still the same
17:04 inside what your project is and it's not
17:06 going to ask you to save it again now if
17:10 I were to look at this blog online
17:11 you'll see that it fully it's fully
17:13 functional I go ahead and click on a
17:15 blog post and you'll notice that it
17:18 doesn't use pretty URLs it just uses the
17:20 default URL structure okay but that's
17:23 fine now let's look at how we can do
17:25 pretty URLs so inside my blog post I'm
17:30 going to set the post URL to be pretty
17:32 okay and let's go ahead and preview this
17:36 what this shows us now is that it says
17:39 hey I see on your server that you're
17:42 using the deep
17:43 alt server setting okay but now you want
17:46 to use pretty URLs and it's gonna show
17:48 you what your pretty URL will be and not
17:53 only that it dynamically builds out the
17:55 HT access rules that you will need to
17:58 paste into your server file okay your HT
18:01 Access file on your server so all you
18:03 have to do is copy and paste this into
18:05 your server
18:06 htaccess file and you're done okay I'm
18:10 gonna go ahead and submit this we're
18:13 gonna say I've now saved pretty URLs on
18:15 my server and let's go ahead and test it
18:17 out just to show you here I've pasted in
18:20 the rules for my HT Access file so and
18:24 these are the exact rules that were
18:25 displayed inside rapidweaver for me so
18:29 here we are back on my main blog page
18:31 I'm going to go ahead and click on a
18:33 blog post and what we'll notice here in
18:35 the URL bar is we're now using pretty
18:38 URLs how easy was that so I hope you see
18:44 how easy it is to create your blog
18:47 linking and pretty URLs now for blog
18:49 right it's really simple with that
18:51 lightbox okay just check the setting the
18:54 stack automatically inside preview
18:56 checks whether or not your server is set
18:58 up properly okay and tells you exactly
19:00 what it should do and all you have to do
19:02 is click Submit and it's done it's all
19:04 done for you straight in rapidweaver
19:06 it's really really awesome now I have
19:09 done one more thing for blog okay and
19:12 it's kind of outside of total CMS a
19:15 little bit I created an app called total
19:17 move and right now what it does is it
19:21 supports tumblr right now only but we
19:23 hope to add more things in the future
19:25 but what it does is it allows you to
19:27 connect to your blog if you have a blog
19:29 with tumblr simply connect to tumblr and
19:31 it downloads your entire blog and all of
19:34 its images for you and then what it does
19:37 is it creates a total CMS instance for
19:41 you automatically so it creates some
19:43 files on your local Mac that all you
19:46 need to do is upload to your server into
19:50 the CMS data folder and you magically
19:52 have your entire tumblr blog migrate it
19:55 into total CMS
19:56 in minutes right it's really cool very
20:01 easy to use and I'm so excited to have
20:04 this now to help people migrate from
20:06 services like tumblr and others in the
20:08 future into total CMS this way we're not
20:12 losing potentially years of blog data
20:14 right this is a really big win now
20:18 before we go I have a couple small
20:20 little things maybe to add okay first
20:22 off I've added Wistia support into
20:25 videos right I think that's really cool
20:27 so now we have YouTube Vimeo and Wistia
20:30 Wistia is a great new service that
20:33 provides really beautiful videos and
20:36 customized skins for the player and some
20:40 really advanced analytics for your
20:42 videos as well so make sure if you are
20:45 using Wistia all you need to do is paste
20:47 in the Wistia URL to your video and it's
20:50 magically embedded in your CMS couldn't
20:53 be any easier and last but not least
20:56 we've added a feature into the total
21:00 admin core stack so a problem that users
21:04 have had in the past is that they've
21:05 downloaded an updated total CMS stacks
21:09 but they forgot to republish all files
21:12 so what happens is the CMS on the server
21:14 is at a date and it's not in sync with
21:17 the stacks so what I've done is we now
21:21 have a warning inside preview on admin
21:24 pages that says hey the C must on your
21:27 server is out of date make sure that you
21:30 republish all files next time you
21:32 actually do a publish ok this will
21:35 alleviate a lot of issues that people
21:37 are like hey I updated my stacks but I
21:40 potentially still see this problem well
21:42 it's because you didn't republish all
21:44 files and you can if you want to ignore
21:47 it for now you can just click on this
21:49 and it will go away ok but it's a nice
21:52 convenient warning to let you know that
21:53 hey the CMS on your server is a little
21:56 bit out of date you might want to
21:58 republish all files next time you're
21:59 ready to publish so that is the total
22:02 CMS 1.3 update write some really solid
22:05 features added to this update right
22:09 I'm happy that we've spent so long
22:11 painstakingly combing over every single
22:15 feature here in this update making sure
22:18 that it is solid right total CMS is just
22:21 feel so awesome and solid now I solid is
22:25 just the great word for it easy to use
22:27 more customizable for you and your
22:29 clients right um it's just my favorite
22:33 CMS it is just it's turned into such an
22:36 amazing product and more it's gave me a
22:40 lot of popularity right we've we've had
22:42 users just do some things that I just
22:44 blew my mind like what I never even
22:47 thought of that
22:47 right so make sure you check it out
