00:00 you want a zip through video or enough sure let's do this
00:17 boom hey Greg another week now the week another dollar another week another
00:22 dollar that's about all I got this week to you me my friend you and me yeah
00:31 I think I think everyone's waiting for my new website launch I talk about it too much like we're waiting for your new website oh my god man I gotta get this
00:37 thing out there you put too much pressure on yourself Joe I know I do I
00:43 definitely do but yeah okay good sometimes you have to be self-motivated
00:48 push yourself a little yep yeah I was stuck in a rut actually last week and
00:54 man I was thinking about this new feature but I was instead of like thinking about exactly just what any of
01:00 you I started going off and thinking about all the like little edge case scenarios like thank you Paul Russell
01:05 because he's the one that gets all these what if we did this with it and what if we did that with it and it's just like
01:11 he gets these things in my head and makes me go and I thought for like three days on something about how to implement
01:17 something because I kept thinking about all these edge cases and how was gonna deal with them and when it came down to
01:22 it I thought when I finally sat down within like two hours I had like the base of almost everything done right it
01:29 was just like God why did I think about this for so long for like three days I mean to be honest I I did I did think
01:35 about it a lot and it it did I think make to end solution better but man I I
01:41 overthought it for sure yeah it happens Paul is really good
01:46 good stuff like that and he's recently started contributing some tips to my Weaver tip site yeah that's cool he put
01:54 it yeah yeah it's really excited he's tryna he likes to have that kind of collection of the sample projects that
02:01 he makes mm-hmm so he now he has like a little bit of a platform so it doesn't get lost I guess what happens a lot is
02:07 that you know like the forum just about that thing you just get buried yeah and he and you know it's hard to dig it out
02:13 and people missing you get those questions same questions over and over
02:19 and over again so now he has a venue where he can just post it and then you could just link to it and say here we go
02:24 you know here's an example oh yeah yeah and people can kind of browse that and keep on top of that so I'm really excited to have him kind of contributing
02:32 and whenever he has you know because of the idea or inspiration for something and sorry so I'm really excited yeah
02:38 love it it's good like that so what are we talking about this week Joe so this
02:43 week we are gonna be talking about video right now me and Greg aren't video experts but we do quite a bit of video
02:51 at least you know I think both of us do so yeah we're gonna give you our tips
02:56 and tricks for video on how to you know make videos how to embed them on your web page right so I think we're we're
03:04 gonna start off with we're gonna start off with how do you create your video right um we're I mean this subject is
03:10 huge we could probably go on for four hours we're just gonna give you a few minute introduction in terms of what we
03:15 use and what not so Greg what do you use to create your videos I used to to
03:23 different tools if I'm doing a professional kind of video I use ScreenFlow no other no other app that
03:31 I'll use if I'm taking a quick screen record for somebody to help somebody else with support issues I use
03:38 oh what's the app sorry drop chair mmm I use drop chair for that or you can use
03:44 there's other apps that that do it to cloud Li and yeah drop ler does it drop
03:50 earth yeah but all my professional stuff that try to make those
03:55 those gifs that I make on Weber tips and he kind of and he kind of been here for
04:02 like an e thanks Joe I think thanks Joe she recorded a nurse
04:13 to record that into a segment just play that yeah I mean that make that one your
04:19 little shortcut keys in here yeah little player did you play yeah so that's what
04:29 I use for all the poor my professional stuff is ScreenFlow now here's a here's a question I use ScreenFlow as well
04:35 amazing app I I couldn't live without it it is great but my ultimate question is
04:41 do you prescript out or do you do it on the fly now you know the answer to that
04:46 Joe you know the answer and I know you're Anna and I know it what you do is
04:52 the exact opposite or what I do
04:57 alright I write a script I've got an iPad that I put the script on my on my left display like recording on my right
05:05 display and and I go through it and I and then I use my script and then the
05:12 audio and then I've tried to put in the closed captions and everything oh wow man yeah going all out as you probably
05:20 thought it's why it's why you produce more than I do I am completely 100% off the cuff I
05:27 sometimes if it's if it's a really important video like a marketing video like um you know like the main sells
05:34 sales video for a particular product or if it's a big one like foundation or total CMS those videos I'll maybe sketch
05:40 out like an outline of the topics that I want to cover in the video but that's about as far as I go um you know outline
05:48 you know ten points I want to make sure I cover in the video and the rest of it is a hundred percent on the fly and I
05:54 will sometimes completely mess up and start an entire segment over again and I
06:00 fix everything in post so when I go to edit all the videos I edit up you know
06:07 or you know delete various parts because I redid it part like 10 times totally happens so
06:13 yeah but now a lot of my videos I do I've been starting like with a quick
06:19 like little pre-roll I try to do something funny or silly right in the video and just to be fun but the problem
06:27 is like some of my videos I was like one upping it and then at the one point it's like I can't I can't up that one anymore
06:32 you know like agent was pretty cool that was a fun one I don't know if you saw my agent video where I like I wore like the
06:37 the trench coat and the hat and the sunglasses and I came up with a nerf gun and I shot the camera and that was fun
06:43 or the the email video were see I bought my son a drone for Christmas and I
06:49 wanted to make sure I could write it off as a business expense so I used the drone to film the incoming video
06:56 segments of the email stacks video and it flew over my neighborhood and down the street and then if it saw me walking
07:02 to my mailbox and I pulled out a letter and all that jazz so yeah business expense for the drone thank you very
07:08 much hope your tax attorneys listening
07:14 its it was I used it for business I used it for business and I plan to using it
07:19 more so yeah so I I do a lot of the the video
07:25 recording I used to do a lot of the videos of me with my webcam I've tried
07:31 to up my game a little bit with either I use I have a canon powershot g7x just a
07:37 little point and shoot and that creates really nice stunning video um and then
07:43 into last year I spoiled myself and I got the 5d Mark for when it was released
07:49 and I've shot a few videos with that um like my Black Friday video I shot with
07:54 that um and that just creates really stunning really sharp crisp video and
08:00 then that like I bought like a little LCD panel that I mount on the hotshoe plate on the top and then I flip it over
08:07 so that I could see myself here's actually a great tip when you're giving a video and you're it's actually you in
08:14 the video um sometimes it's hard to look at the camera right or the webcam and so
08:19 what I do is I open up a I created a little app for myself I call cam tastic
08:25 but you can open up like photobooth on your Mac and just open that up and put it up at the top of the window next to
08:30 the web cam so that you see yourself and I find it so much easier feels like yes
08:36 it's like I'm talking to myself but at least you have something to focus on in someone to talk to you're talking to
08:41 yourself and I find that um very beneficial so there's a little cool little tip if you're if you are on video
08:48 either a webcam or a camera get something where you can see yourself so that you can actually like have something to focus on so that's a cool
08:56 little tip and it's gonna do yeah and then I take all those from all those video files from that my drone or cameras or whatnot
09:03 and there you know they save all to mp4 files and I drag and drop those into ScreenFlow and then I you know mix and
09:10 match those with the actual screen recordings that I do with ScreenFlow so
09:16 okay I'm going a little a little bit more in-depth than I originally planned but next up is when you're recording
09:21 your screen okay um record in full resolution so record your entire screen
09:27 okay then when you're in ScreenFlow go ahead and it's like file video you know
09:33 dimensions or whatnot or you know file setup and then change the dimensions of the video to be 1920 by 1080 okay or HD
09:42 right and then what that is is your screen size the this the resolution of
09:47 your video recordings are bigger than that mine is like you know you know over
09:53 4k right but then what's cool about that is instead of shrinking the the the
09:58 videos down to be you know or keeping the videos of that dimension and then exporting it to 1080p um if you change
10:06 the video size in ScreenFlow and then all your videos are scaled up so everything is going to be super sharp
10:12 and crisp when you want to zoom into various elements on the page right so
10:17 that's a cool little tip um it took me years to figure that one out and it seems so logical now but yeah ever since
10:25 I started doing that a lot of my screen recordings were a lot more sharp and crisp because I wasn't scaling the video
10:31 up and down so yeah so I have a little tip
10:37 length minutes three minutes my god do you
10:43 think I could ever speak less than three minutes man no I mean your your your first sentence to three minutes yeah I
10:52 mean that's what are you targeting oh man so I never hit my targets let me just say that you know um I want to
10:59 create video short videos and I always end up going more even like when I do my like video tutorials I like how to use
11:06 this stack you know I think okay I want to do this in ten minutes and then 35 minutes later the video is
11:12 done you know it's well the video is that long you know I've seen my my probably my my
11:20 common my average length is probably closer to thirty minutes um so I'm Way but that's for like a
11:27 tutorial based video you know yeah I'm something like sales video let's say your product page sales pitch
11:34 video yes I tried to try to shoot for that I would like I would love that to be under two minutes actually um but
11:41 sometimes I find that that hard to do as well mm-hmm yeah you know yeah I think
11:47 that's a good range yeah cool so here I've talked about next what videos so
11:53 next up is compression yeah I think that I think that's pretty good so I'll be
11:59 honest most time when I am using ScreenFlow I I tweak some of the export
12:06 settings are actually let me I'll just let's open it up really quick I tweaked some of the export settings but most
12:12 time I just take whatever their stock is and I upload 1080p straight up to YouTube and ie I don't I use ScreenFlow
12:19 they connect straight to YouTube they also connect a bunch of other video providers right but yeah I do straight
12:25 up to YouTube and yeah I use ScreenFlow compression but there are a lot of other
12:31 great video compression apps out there that you should probably pay attention to if you want to host your own videos
12:38 and do stuff like that how about you Greg and I do the same as you except I
12:44 typically use Vimeo okay yeah I mean if I was to do it myself I'd
12:49 use handbrake mm-hmm but to be honest I kind of rely on these hosting providers
12:55 their technology and their logarithms their compression engines to do that for
13:01 me yeah so I want I personally want to retain the full uncompressed
13:10 as much as possible and like leave that kind of mojo magic' to them yep and so that I can always
13:18 publish it somewhere else I could always republish it and have it rien coded mm-hmm stuff like that you know yeah I
13:24 never I never do that my own on my own yeah so when I export it to from ScreenFlow I also always export it
13:30 locally and I save that local copy to my nas so that you know obviously if
13:36 anything were to happen cuz I don't save the ScreenFlow files themselves because those are ginormous right um so I do
13:42 save the exported mp4 file that got uploaded the same exact file that gets
13:47 uploaded to YouTube I save that file and throw that out on an AZ that has all my
13:52 videos on it cool yeah cool so you mentioned
13:58 self-hosting yes so um how do you feel about we're housing your videos um you
14:05 know I think you're doing like tutorial length videos it just doesn't make any sense to warehouse those yourself where
14:12 warehouse in your own videos makes sense is if you're doing like some background video or stings that that's when I would
14:18 warehouse a video myself right is if you know I'm using something like my impact or eclipse tack where those support
14:25 background videos and you can have content on on top of it and stuff like that right those type of videos which
14:31 are more you know accent and background of your site um and add to the style I think those
14:36 videos make sense to host yourself okay and that's where you should look at more
14:42 compression tools such as handbrake like Greg mentioned there's also we've mentioned some other tools in the past
14:47 video compressed Pro um Apple has an app called compressor as well which is really great and if you're Oberer geeky
14:54 and adventurous you can use this command line tool called ffmpeg which most of
14:59 these apps are just wrappers around anyway yeah even I agree with you my
15:06 only caveat is that it that's really like a fine line like
15:11 those background videos it quickly becomes much more than that and you almost could benefit from hosting it on
15:19 a CDN like CloudFlare or something like that to get clogged for the cache room
15:24 so it's a very it quickly becomes like you might as well just publish it on a
15:30 on a CDN or something like that yeah I also I think a lot of times those people when they do those background videos
15:36 they they go way overboard and they're huge right I mean a lot of that I'll see ones that are like 50 megabytes and
15:43 she's like yo dude this needs to be like one megabyte you know and a you know you
15:50 don't necessarily you might not need 1080p or 4k video which some people I've seen try to use right you don't need
15:55 that and there's some tricks like if you if you put an overlay on top of the video like some sort like a transparent
16:02 overlay you can get away with like murdering that video file like you can
16:07 really crank down that resolution and just by adding the overlay no one will ever notice they will notice your page
16:14 load being slowed much more so than they're gonna be like oh yeah check out that super sharp crisp background video
16:21 no they're not do you know who else notices your page load being slow
16:27 do you need anything evening oh man I
16:33 should've done the root of the drumroll fat damn it I messed up again Oh Joey you're killing me damn yeah
16:42 exactly Google notices that's a huge huge thing
16:49 no page because then your bounce rate goes up your SEO dives down yeah thanks
16:56 for that Joe reminding me of that yeah so anyway if you want to warehouse your image um check out our if you if
17:04 you've listed all the image you know podcasts we did we did a section on warehouse scene it's identically the
17:10 same as images you create a folder on your server you upload the video there you get the URL you're done right
17:16 there's tons of apps out there they do it transmit drop share a whole bunch of other ones check those out check out
17:23 that episode on images we don't need to rehash all that information their degree it's pretty much exactly the same as
17:30 we're asking an image to warehouse a video I agree this big great time to say we for radio.com slash archive yeah
17:38 great we're becoming pros man look at that okay where you see where hand you're up
17:43 riff for like yeah it's like volleyball it's like volleyball you just like
17:49 there's a lay it up and you know the other one spikes it okay so I don't want
17:57 to warehouse in what do I do next we use a video service right yes I'm all in with YouTube how about you Greg
18:05 you know I love Vimeo I love the quality of their videos but if I was to if you
18:12 were to rename YouTube to something else and call it something different I would call it Google jr. and pure SEO it's
18:23 like a second Google so you know there's just so many users on it so you know I
18:28 love I love Vimeo I don't know if I'll I'll probably end up doing in the near
18:34 future is just publishing in both places mm-hmm letting that's learning that search engine ranking you know kind of
18:41 help there so basically what I'd say is I'm probably gonna start publishing in both places because the SEO boost from a
18:48 service like YouTube because it's owned so closely by Google is just too hard to ignore mm-hmm you know and but I do love
18:57 I do love Vimeo the quality the player the analytics the service in general I
19:03 think it's you know great service yep you know if you're doing the professional stuff they seem to have
19:09 better professional grade tools and things so yeah yeah so back in the day I
19:18 used Vimeo as well and it was because I used it back in a day because their video player was like head and shoulders
19:26 above youtubes right in terms of just the look and feel of the video player
19:31 right and I was also kind of trying to be the hipster trendy guy that didn't go
19:37 with YouTube and I'm using Vimeo right and so I did do that and then and then I
19:43 decided you know that was kind of stupid because you know like you said YouTube it is the number two search engine in
19:49 the world I've heard that many times I don't know how true that is but I don't I don't think it's untrue so I did start
19:58 uploading everything twice I uploaded a video to YouTube and then a video to Vimeo and then I did that for a while
20:04 and then I was like this is nuts and too much work and trying to maintain all that so then I just gave up on Vimeo and
20:11 now all of my new videos are purely on YouTube and I do like their player their
20:17 player has vastly improved over the years um there are some hidden features that you could do like you know like
20:23 stopping those related videos at the very end or just you know what a lot of people don't like um from a new site
20:30 design I almost went back to Vimeo um and then I just rethought about it again
20:37 and didn't want to do that to myself of trying to upload videos twice to two different places I know with ScreenFlow
20:43 it's not that much difficult you just you know publish a video twice it's not hard but um you know I
20:49 I also if I am gonna use YouTube and have a youtube channel then I wanna I want as many people as they're driving
20:56 traffic to that YouTube channel as well so that way you know YouTube appreciates
21:01 me giving getting more traffic hopefully boosting my results or related videos or whatever they do right whatever the
21:07 YouTube magic they do is so that's why I definitely have decided to give up on
21:13 Vimeo I'm I still have a lot of video on there on Vimeo and am I not gonna remove them right now but all my latest in
21:21 latest stuff is all on youtube.com slash Weaver space and I definitely plan on
21:27 you know focusing on that YouTube channel a lot more in the in the in the coming year to really promote it make it
21:34 nicer I got some a thing called YouTube or to buddy which is kind of like a
21:39 YouTube management extension on steroids for you know you for your YouTube
21:44 channels and whatnot um you know another service I actually I also tried for a
21:50 while is called Wistia and i have a few videos on like the if you go to foundation stacks comm that video on the
21:58 homepage is Wistia and a few others like I think my call to action stack of them and a few other like sales promo videos
22:04 were on Wistia and I I started I looked at Wistia and it's pricy it's definitely pricy um and they had a
22:12 special going on at one point where for 25 bucks a month I got their business plan which was which now if you were to
22:18 do that is like ila think it's like a hundred and fifty dollars a month or something something nuts and because of that savings I never got
22:26 off of it and I still have a few videos on there but definitely this year I'm gonna I'm gonna kill that account off
22:33 recoup by twenty-five dollars a month that I'm paying them and and have everything hosted off youtube
22:39 yeah that's cool I'm funny story I used to work this advertising company and they were working out of the same
22:46 building as us so I've met the founder of Wistia and stuff like that is really really cool they do have some really
22:54 advanced analytics tools and stuff like that yes III didn't think that I was really utilizing it to the fullest the
23:01 stuff they do is is phenomenal I do have to say I loved that I loved everything they do and they also do a lot of like
23:07 video tutorials as well like to teach eat and be a better videographer and stuff like that so the the content and
23:13 the the product that they have is really stellar um I just feel it's it's not
23:18 what I need right now so yeah yeah yeah they're just like the heat maps and giving you the analytics
23:23 of like when people stop watching your video and stuff like that and they have some advanced marketing stuff in there
23:29 too you can have like pop-ups that you know integrate with your own marketing system and stuff like that so there's
23:34 definitely some some benefits of it yeah but yeah I hear you I can't that's just
23:40 probably out of the price point of many of you know UI and a lot of our listeners too
23:45 yeah yep um so yes a couple a couple more I have on the list um one is cloud in airy we talked about cloud in airy on
23:52 on the images podcast and they also do video I've never played with them at all
23:57 for video but I know that they do do video so how do you use cloud in area right did you say that use cloud Andheri
24:04 not no never for video okay yeah I'm not usually with anymore played with them for static images and
24:11 stuff like that to try out their service but never ever something for video whenever something
24:16 I've put into like a production environment but I certainly we trust them to do that yeah
24:23 I just quickly search to see if they have video management wonder if they have any sort of transformations oh they
24:29 do they you can do a square square cropped video based on your you know your 90s you know sixteen by nine video
24:37 that's pretty cool um interesting so yeah I'm pretty sure they're free plan I
24:42 think that would be pretty nuts I pretty sure you'd have to pay for the video stuff um you can't do it for free like
24:48 you could with images with them at least I would assume that I don't know look into it but um yeah next up last one on
24:55 my list is CloudFlare yeah it's kind of new it's in beta right now their their
25:00 video service I haven't used it at all do you know much about it Greg all they
25:06 know is that it's in beta and it sounds interesting I don't think has turned is the cost of yeah that's service because
25:13 it's not gonna be free yep you will have to pay for it and it will be
25:19 pay-per-use and so it's not included in the plans from when I when I gather so
25:25 even if you paid $20 a month for your site or whatever you gotta pay on top of
25:31 that for the video hosting yes yeah you have to pay a usage fee for you know it depends on how much you use that feature
25:37 they yeah they they be they've been doing that a for a few other things like this Argo and a bunch of other stuff
25:42 some other features that you pay based on usage all right so yeah I don't know the pricing will be
25:49 I don't think they've announced it at all it's just in beta so but yeah and
25:55 that's why I would assume it's kind of just warehousing so you'd have a video up there and instead of it's being served up from your server it'll be
26:01 served up from there I'd probably recommend if you're gonna do you know big long videos still don't use
26:06 something like CloudFlare probably better with something like Vimeo or YouTube but I don't know the pricing
26:11 again like we said yep so yeah yeah it'll be interesting people have to keep
26:16 it we'll have to keep an eye on it and yeah anything changes or us we live in a we will let everybody know yeah
26:22 cool well one thing I should mention one thing that I've gotten a couple requests from users is creating a video version
26:29 of this podcast so I have been looking into it I actually bought um so that I'm
26:36 going to talk to Greg about this so I bought a plugin for Final Cut Pro that does like the you know like the audio
26:42 wave things like you know like when an audio goes you know like the wave things
26:47 like the stereo right so I got this plugin for Final Cut and you you load in
26:53 your video your audio file and it'll dynamically create this wave thing so I was thinking like just doing like a some
26:59 like our artwork and then like at the bottom would just be a WAV file you know
27:04 a way video of the audio that's actually playing right then and then that could be the video and upload that to YouTube
27:11 or something like that and the reason people have been wanting this is we have a couple hearing
27:18 impaired users and obviously if you are hearing impaired you cannot listen to a
27:25 podcast and YouTube will auto transcribe video for free so you know that was a
27:33 way that we could potentially get the podcast out to people and get it to auto
27:39 transcribed interesting yeah so
27:45 interesting so it's pretty cool it's a pretty cool plugin um I don't know final
27:51 cut at all so I'm trying to learn final cut as well and I'm you know all my kids Mike Suns a big good drummer so I got
27:57 that also I thought it'd be cool like to when I record him playing the drums it would like I could have his the song going while he's drumming Allen whatever
28:05 that'd be kind of cool but yeah and my copious amounts of free time yeah anyway
28:12 well by the time this is released a cool world cup is gonna be out there and I'm
28:17 excited about that are you a World Cup fan Greg I am very excited about it I am I wish I
28:26 can watch it more I didn't actually really get into soccer until the grad school actually okay yeah started
28:33 playing pickup soccer and my buddy was an avid soccer fan I'm getting into it more and more over
28:39 the years and appreciate the intensity and dedication of of the fans and sport
28:44 you know and playing pickup soccer it really is how hard it is that how much fun it is in how how you can move with
28:52 your feet ins kind of like you know 90 minutes of intensive running yeah had to
28:59 be insane shape for that yeah but by the time this podcast ends looks like I was just looking at the day so it looks like
29:04 they'll be starting the knockout rounds or the real tough so yeah I'm excited it starts yeah yep and if you want some
29:13 status everyone check out world cup brackets info it's cool little website I made just a fun side project
29:19 yeah nice it has all the brackets and the groups and all that jazz and I'm
29:24 going to be live updating as the games go on every day I'll update the website with all those stats and whatnot so yeah
29:32 you updated by hand yeah so it's a it's a static generated site so I've like a JSON file and so I'll put in all the
29:40 scores inside the JSON file and then I'll just it runs on off Jekyll and and then so
29:45 I'll process the Jekyll file and it'll rebuild the static site and I'll just publish back up every day and so it's
29:52 semi manual cool yeah thanks yeah it's gonna be fun it's
